A Victorian Treasure

Built in 1893 by Anna’s town doctor, Dr. Martin, the grand Queen Anne-style home at 301 W. High Street quickly became the talk of the town. With its elaborate architecture, vibrant facade, and ornate porch, it was more than just a house, it was a symbol of elegance and pride in a growing community. Unfortunately, just a few years later, the Martin family fell on hard times and had to part with the home.

It was then purchased by another beloved town doctor, Mr. Ayers, who moved in with his family, and their cherished Scottish Terrier. The Ayers family left a lasting mark on the home, especially through Esther Ayers, the doctor’s daughter and a beloved high school art teacher in Anna. After her father’s passing, Esther inherited the home and remained its heart and soul for the rest of her life. Her spirit still lingers in the house, and two of her original drawings of the property remain lovingly preserved within its walls.

In the decades that followed, the Foley family brought thoughtful updates like modern HVAC, electrical, and a reimagined kitchen, keeping the home livable while honoring its roots. In 2023, the Bardwells continued that stewardship before placing the keys into the hands of the next caretakers: Dana Bushouse and Paige Sochor.
